We held a party at the Farmington Polo Club to celebrate the wedding of Holly and Sumner. A grand time was had by all. Wendy's decorations were beautiful. In the days before and after the party, some folks enjoyed golfing and others enjoyed motorcycling. On Sunday we enjoyed the hospitality of David and Lynn Alperin for a cookout. Blackened catfish was redefined! These photos were taken with a pocket camera, often without flash, and do not do the celebrations justice.

Leni and I visited Sumner in Toronto over a long weekend. He showed us the University, his lodgings, the Bata Shoe Museum, the Aga Kahn Museum, Casa Loma, and many fine places to eat. We had a great time!

Karen and John Forster finally visited us in Florida. Together we toured the DuBois Pioneer Home at Jupiter inlet. The home was built atop a Native American shell rock midden in 1898. From there we hopped over to the lighthouse. No one wanted to climb the 105 stairs, so we investigated the museum (actually the gift shop).

Miki and Marc came to Lake Worth for a long Thanksgiving weekend. When not cooking or eating they enjoyed the flat tire on their rental car. The Friedbergs joined us for the Thanksgiving dinner. So did Kate Alperin.

Sumner J. Alperin-Lea was graduated summa cum laude by Brandeis University in the morning. He was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Bio-Chemistry and Philosophy. We met Liana Simpson's lovely parents for the first time at lunch. Sumner departed for hiking in Scotland, but we stayed to see Liana's ceremony in the afternoon.

Elena declared that the kitchen tile grout must go (and the tile with it). Selecting new tile took only three months. Then came Idea Tile (Antonio Pisana and Son). What a mess, but nice results.

On September 10, 2017, Hurricane Irma devastated the Florida Keys and Marco Island, but was relatively kind to Palm Beach County. Andover lost a few trees and limbs, and had a lot of vegetation to clean up. Very lucky! Hurricanes Jean and Francis in 2005, and Wilma in 2006 were far less kind. Although 70% of FPL customers lost power, Andover did not. However, Comcast cable and internet were down for two days.

On August 21 we visited the Santee, SC, National Wildlife Refuge to view the total eclipse. We arrived at 7:30 AM, six hours in advance, to get the last parking spot at the Visitors Center. Santee afforded the longest possible totality, 2 minutes and 34 seconds. Very eerie. My photos make the sun look larger than it appeared. Only a sliver of light showed around the moon. For the next total eclipse, when Elena and I are 99 years old, I'll buy a better camera.

Elena and I visited Sumner and Liana at his apartment in Waltham. We took them to the New England Aquarium in Boston, and completed the afternoon with dim sum in Chinatown. All very cool.

We had previously refaced the cabinets in our bathroom. Nice, but it caused the rest of the room to look tired. So, after many trips to many tile stores, we replaced the shower and the floor. New shower enclosure will be installed shortly. We'll post more photos to this album when the job is completed. Done.

We missed it last year, but Lily, Sam, David and I met at the AMCA meet in Oley, PA, again this year. We ogled the bikes and rode around a bit. Same ate 18 hamburgers(?) and a Spider Roll. Lily ate French fries. No new purchases although we had 37 candidates. On Sunday we enjoyed the Crystal Cave.

Westward Ho! Wednesday took us to Cameron, Glen Canyon, Zion, and Springdale. Route 9, the only road to Zion, was closed for repairs until 4:00 PM, so we lunched at Zion Mountain Resort. Excellent! Driving through the canyon was overwhelming.

Long before the new Indian Motocycle exhibit was built, the Springfield Museums displayed one of George Yarocki's 101 Scouts as part of their historical exhibit. The new museum now owns that Scout. You can see that Springfield had it all at one time.

We began to rebuild The Beast on Friday. It was a motorcycle again on Tuesday. On Wednesday, we took it down from the assembly room and rode it. Here are 300 or so pictures of GLY rebuilding a 101 Scout Motor (see the master at work). He calls it the best motor he has built. I will now spell Beast with a long E (Best).

As I left George on Friday night I asked that he wait for me to begin repairs. On Saturday night he called to tell me that "debris from the old piston destroyed the new one!" He couldn't help it! The following Friday we met to tear down DGP-7199 and assess the damage. While waiting to begin, I photographed some of George's memorabilia and family portraits. Here are a series of pictures that show the complete disassembly of a 101 Scout engine. There are fewer parts in the engine than in the seat! I helped a little, mostly by holding tools, and taking pictures. There was remarkably little damage, given the amount of metal we removed from the crankcase and flywheels. The cylinders, rods, cases and most other parts are good. The wrist pins, bearings and cages are bad. Incredible! We will reassemble the engine on Friday, 7/27.

Leni and I drove a cage to Springfield on Saturday to participate in the celebrations (no more saddle time for awhile). We looked at the bikes, most of which were on the Century Ride Home (Except for a spectacular white Indian 4). We looked at the New Indians. We listened to the band. We ate hot dogs. Then we went to Chester.

Appreciations, instructions, escort, lineup, and we are off. Smooth sailing. Interested Onlookers. Next stop Springfield! But, lightening strikes twice! Only six miles from the Memorial Bridge The Beast developed engine trouble and stalled. George, of course, stopped, but the Century Ride Home passed us by (as it should). We realized quickly that I had lost the front cylinder again. But, somehow, George got it running again (he once rode hundreds of miles on a 101 with only one cylinder firing). George wanted to switch bikes, but I wanted desperately to finish on The Beast. So, off I went, keeping up the RPM, hearing the engine grinding, and waving furiously at traffic (no lights or signs mattered). I limped across the bridge. But where was the crowd? WRONG BRIDGE! When I turned around to cross back The Beast stalled. I was dejected. Meanwhile, George had asked directions, crossed the Memorial Bridge, and completed his 988 mile odyssey from Columbus to Springfield. Later he told me thi

Route 20 was much more pleasant running into Pittsfield. We were met at "The Brewery" by a large crowd of well-wishers and onlookers. My sister, Liz, met us. I think she was checking on Jack. I was under strict orders from Liz not to kill him (as I had done in Daytona). And, Robin Gazza was there with his beautiful Sport Scout. He rode on to Springfield with us.

Route 20 out of Schenectady has many, many traffic signals. It isn't long before we are again separated from the CRH. So, today we are a group of three. Albert is with us on his "Springfield or Bust" Chief. And, Jack is staying very close in the van in case The Beast needs help. We stopped for coffee, and to service the Scouts. Whenever George bends down beside a 101, someone will approach him with questions. Today it was Channell 13. George taught the reporter to say "1929 101 Scout. " That required only three takes. On to Pittsfield.

July 12, 2001

The planned routes were 7, 28 and 5. For a change, we followed them. New York is beautiful. There was a coffee break planned for Oneonta. Lunch was to be in Cooperstown. We never found either. Until today the 101s had travelled alone. Today, a number of riders asked to accompany the oldest motorcycles on the ride. The closer we got to Springfield, the more Indian spirit emerged. Bob lead us on his glorious red girder Chief. At the first stop one rider commented, "I thought we were going to ride with the 101s?" Bob said, "You Are!" In other words, we had no trouble keeping pace. During the ride, a Sport Scout broke down and Jack stopped to load it on the trailer. Unfortunately, we didn't see this. As luck would have it, we rode on without our support vehicle. Some cold rain found us just outside of Oneonta. And, that wasn't my only problem. Shortly before Cooperstown, I dramatically lost power. One cylinder had failed. We loaded The Beast into Ed's trailer and proceeded to Schenectady.

A few short miles from Harrisburg in Etters, PA, is the Mecca of Indian Motorcycles! Bob and Robin are masters of the craft. Kate and Kim are gracious hostesses. Thanks for having us on Tuesday! There are over 150 pictures here. I didn't title them because they speak for themselves. The 841 is spectacular! Don't miss the "Etters Flash", a 101 rival for "The Beast" George made throttle control improvements for the 101s. Jack relaxed. I looked at everything. Later in the day the television cameras invaded.

July 8, 2001

Sunday we rode to Cumberland, Maryland. Before each ride there is a coordination meeting at the Kiwi truck. We got a map, directions and announcements. We embarked with the first group, the "Poke Posse", as we thought our Scouts might have difficulty keeping pace. Fifteen minutes into the ride George's license plate was dangling by one bolt. After repairs, we travelled as a group of two bikes and a chase Van. We stopped at 62 miles for coffee while the rest of the CRH passed. At 92 miles The Beast died while climbing a hill. At 98 miles we found my carburetor was very loose! Soon after, George's headlamp bulb fried due to overcharging. Next, my toolbox opened and I lost my registration and insurance cards. These minor mishaps aside, the bikes ran well. Route 50 has wonderful mountain twisties, including 180 degree switchbacks. In all, we travelled 320 miles. My battery died because the belt on my alternator had broken. We arrived in Cumberland at dusk without lights!

We motored to the Museum in the morning and saw the new exhibit, "100 Years of Indian". George introduced my to Ed Youngblood, past president of the AMA, and Exhibit Curator. I also spoke with Rick Shunk, Editor of the wonderful "The Antique Motorcycle" magazine. George Yarocki's 1929 101 Scout is on display, as is a Hendee Special. I took many, many pictures of the exhibit.

After returning to Columbus from Dayton we waited for the Century Riders. They were scheduled to arrive at 6:00 PM. Other riders joining the CRH in Columbus were also waiting. We met many people and took a few pictures. It was a nice night. The Century Ride Home finally arrived at 10:00 PM with many stories to tell about breaking down and getting lost.

George and I were just getting ready for bed when Jack returned to the room. "Better get dressed. One of the motorcycles is leaking," he said. We dashed out and uncovered the bikes to find that our gas can was leaking. Thank God it was only that! Of course, we cleaned up the parking lot.

George, Jack and I left The Creamery at 7:30 and were eating breakfast by 7:45 (live to ride, ride to eat). We travelled all day to arrive in Columbus at 11:00 PM. Encountered rain in the beautiful Allegheny mountains. George loves Cracker Barrel restaurants.
